Abstract

Vanilla, derived from the beans of the Vanilla planifolia orchid, is a globally cherished spice known for its sweet aroma and flavor. Beyond its culinary applications, this review delves into the Ayurvedic medicinal properties of vanilla, unraveling its potential as a powerful herb in traditional medicine. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, recognizes vanilla for its diverse therapeutic attributes. The active compounds in vanilla, such as vanillin, contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These qualities align with Ayurvedic principles, emphasizing the balance of bodily functions and prevention of diseases. Vanilla has been historically employed to alleviate digestive disorders, respiratory ailments and stress-related conditions. Ayurvedic practitioners harness its calming effects on the nervous system, promoting mental well-being.
