Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most revolving hazardous pollutant among all the well-known heavy metals. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of curcumin against Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) induced pulmonary and cardiac (auricles and ventricles) toxicity in albino mice.

For this study, experiment was performed for two intervals i.e.; 15 and 45 days. Mice were segregated into 8 groups i.e; 5mice/group. Group I and V mice were kept as control and were given water along with pellet diet. Group II and VI mice were given CdCl2 orally on alternate days for 15 and 45 days. Group III and VII mice were given 1mg/kg body weight of CdCl2 on alternate days and 100mg/kg body weight of Curcumin daily orally for 15 and 45 days. Group IV and VIII mice were given an oral dose of 100 mg/kg body weight of Curcumin daily and were kept as positive control for 15 and 45 days. Autopsies were done on 15- and 45-days post-treatment.

Results of the present study showed changes in the biochemical parameters. Biochemical analysis showed decline in total glycogen, cholesterol and protein concentration in lung as well as in heart (auricles and ventricles) of Cadmium chloride treated mice. However, results indicated that CdCl2 treatment along with Curcumin ameliorated the altered biochemical parameters in both the organs as curcumin triggered the antioxidant enzymes remarkably. Whereas, Curcumin treated groups showed normal concentration of total cholesterol, glycogen and protein as in control groups.
