Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it. Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of tissue on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or intestines. Several recent studies have looked into genetic polymorphisms as a possible factor in endometriosis development. The aim of this study is to review a case control studies of current data on genes with nucleotide polymorphisms in relation to endometriosis. We searched PubMed for endometriosis, polymorphism, and interleukin publications and found 50 between 2001 and 2020. These were classified according to the type of genetic polymorphism investigated and whether the outcome favored or disfavored endometriosis association. We discovered quite a large number of contradictory results. Approximately half of the studies reviewed found an association between various polymorphisms and endometriosis. According to the review, we can conclude that there is a strong gene-environmental interactions which might definitively influence approaches to identify genetic variants involved in association with endometriosis.
